4 Transformative Benefits of Using the Best Face Essence

Summary

  • An ancient staple in Japan, essences are finally gaining popularity in the US.
  • An essence is a watery liquid infused with skin-benefiting active ingredients that can hydrate, brighten, firm, and more.
  • An essence is pressed into the skin after cleansing and before serums and moisturizers, and is designed for daily use.
  • Some of the best essences for the face have dramatic benefits, including hydrating, plumping, reducing the appearance of wrinkles (as effectively as a retinol), and making the rest of your skincare products work better.

Nothing can transform the skin quite like a facial essence. What is the best face essence for you, and how do you apply it? We uncover all your questions.

Japan's most famous beauty manual, “Miyakofuzoku Kewaiden” (translated as “Capital Beauty and Style Handbook”), which was published in 1813, documented the time-honored beauty practices of the era, featuring tips on skincare, makeup, hair care, and even posture and hygiene. The revered guide references “beauty waters” used by geisha to cleanse and refine the skin, helping to achieve a translucent complexion. You might not be familiar with “beauty waters,” but you likely know their modern name: essences. Rooted in centuries of ancient wisdom, the best facial essences can transform the skin. We discover the history of these beauty waters, when to use them, and the best essence for the face.

What Is An Essence?

An essence is a watery liquid infused with skin-benefiting properties that is pressed into the skin after cleansing and before serums and moisturizers. Each formula has its own unique actives that can target hydration, exfoliation, or brightening, depending on the ingredients included. All essences will be liquid, although some can be more viscous than others. The beauty of an essence is the whisper-thin consistency, which allows it to be layered under any products but deliver major benefits and results.

In the West, many skincare fanatics may be more familiar with a harsh approach to skincare, like cleansers that leave skin feeling ‘squeaky clean,’ astringent toners, and blemish-eradicating (and microbiome-eliminating) creams popular in recent decades. Counter that with the lasting nature of essences. In the beauty bible of “Miyakofuzoku Kewaiden,” essences are described as beauty waters or flower waters, which were a mixture of rice bran, camellia blooms, and wild blossoms distilled from porcelain kettles. The elixir was associated with the soft, translucent glow that is synonymous with geisha. Across Asia, these facial essences have been a mainstay in daily beauty rituals for centuries because of their effectiveness and gentle nature, perfectly aligned with the nourishing point of view that is deeply rooted in Asian beauty traditions. Thankfully, Western culture has caught onto the skin barrier-improving and gentle approach of many Asian techniques, especially essences.

Essence Benefits

The best face essence can accomplish numerous benefits in a single application, here are a few of the most notable.

Hydrates

The best facial essence hydrates first and foremost. The low molecular weight allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin, allowing it to hydrate more notably and for longer periods of time. This is often why an essence is recommended for those with dry skin, as it can be almost as necessary as a moisturizer.

Helps Your Skincare Work Better

Fascinatingly, an essence can actually improve the performance of your other skincare products. Essences contain humectants, which have been shown to retain both active ingredients and moisture in the skin longer than water alone, boosting the effectiveness of the products that are applied after it.

Reduces Wrinkles

While it approaches skin in a gentle manner, essences aren’t just surface-level. The best facial essence can be just as effective as retinol (and retinol alternatives like bakuchiol) at reducing the look of wrinkles and improving visible firmness.

Provides Antioxidant Protection

Antioxidants like Vitamin C are a necessary part of a daily skincare routine, helping to shield from accelerated aging and inflammation. If you don’t want to incorporate a serum that provides antioxidants (or want even more antioxidant protection), try an essence, which can provide antioxidant protection, neutralizing free radicals that are linked to premature aging and the accumulation of senescent cells.

How & When To Use Face Essence

So you’d like to incorporate an essence into your daily skincare routine? Wonderful! However, make sure you use it correctly (and consistently) so you get the maximum benefits out of it. After cleansing and before you apply any other products, splash a palmful of an essence into your hand, then press it into your face and neck. (As a pro tip, an essence can be applied in multiple layers, as seen in several Asian methodologies. This is done to drench the skin in moisture and is simple: apply a layer of essence, let it dry down, and then apply another layer.) You’re not done here, though. Ensure you lock in that juicy hydration with a serum (or two), if using, and a moisturizer. Don’t forget your sunscreen if it’s daytime. An essence is designed for consistency, so feel free to use it both morning and night for the best results.

Best Essence for Face

Even though they are fairly new to the Western world, essences have taken off. In a sea of options, we think one stands apart from the rest.

The Do-It-All Essence

While there are many types of essences, we love a universal option, one that’s ideal for all skin types. Tatcha’s Essence isn’t just by chance or coincidence; it has taken years of research, tireless dedication, and countless tests to perfect. Remember “Miyakofuzoku Kewaiden”? Tatcha’s founder, Vicky Tsai, researched the manuscript for years and discovered how vital essences are to healthy, radiant complexions. This led Tsai and the Tokyo-based Tatcha Institute to create the proprietary Hadasei-3, which The Essence is made solely of. Hadasei-3 is a complex of Japanese superfoods – after all, what’s good for the body is good for the skin – double fermented Akita rice, Uji green tea, and Okinawa algae, which work in harmony to reveal beautiful skin.

Hadasei-3 is made of:

  • Akita rice, which contains moisturizing proteins to support the skin barrier function.

  • Uji green tea, which neutralizes oxidative stressors and visibly reduces signs of premature aging.

  • Okinawa algae, which improves skin’s ability to retain moisture with plumping polysaccharides (aka large carbohydrate molecules that act as natural moisturizers, strengthening the skin's barrier function, and improving its ability to retain water).

Together, Hadasei-3 harnesses the transformative power of double fermentation, and, as a byproduct, it contains essential amino acids and lactic acid. The complex hydrates, firms, softens, smooths, supports, renews, and plumps all in one application. It is so essential to the DNA of Tatcha that it is present in a number of our formulas, from the beloved Kissu Lip Mask and The Dewy Serum to the Indigo Overnight Repair and The Dewy Skin Cream.

The clinical results with The Essence are quite extraordinary, too. After one use, skin shows a 621 percent – yes, you read that correctly, 621! – improvement in moisturization.* It also showed an improvement in smoothness, softness, and suppleness after a single application.** Then, after a week, users showed improvements in radiance** and firmness.*** Also, after a week, 100 percent of users noticed an improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.**** In fact, The Essence has been proven to be just as effective as retinol at improving visible firmness.***** It also provides antioxidant protection and improves the performance of other skincare products applied after. It really can do it all.

Which essence is right for your skin type? The best face essence for acne-prone skin is also the best face essence for combination skin, which also happens to be the best face essence for mature skin, and coincidentally the best face essence for oily skin, too. The lightweight, non-comedogenic, and plumping product is designed for all. It’s rare to have a universal product that truly is ideal for all skin types, but Tatcha’s Essence is a very rare product indeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an essence replace my serum or moisturizer?
Think of an essence as your skincare product's best friend, as it helps them work even more effectively. It won't replace them, especially a moisturizer, but it can enhance the effectiveness of a serum and moisturizer.
Will layering an essence with exfoliating acids cause irritation?
Layering an essence over your exfoliating acid should not cause any irritation because the exfoliants in an essence are so subtle and low-dose. However, it's best to work up to adding both in your routine at the same time. Start by using the exfoliating acid one night, then the essence the following evening. Then, once that's tolerated, use either the essence or exfoliant in the morning, and then, in the evening, use the other formula you didn't use in the morning. Finally, after that proves no irritation (if it does, stick to alternating the acid every few nights, and the essence can be used twice a day still, just not at the same time as you used the acid), apply both, but allow the acid to dry down before applying the essence, ideally 5 to 10 minutes.
How often should I use an essence in my routine?
Essences are the rare formula that can be used twice a day to enhance the skin and other products applied afterwards. Anything more is probably not necessary, and any amount less is perfectly okay, although you won't get the long-term benefits associated with twice-a-day clinical trials.
How long should I wait after applying essence before layering other products?
This is a great question! Some products need a bit of dry-down time before the next formula is applied, but an essence is not one. In fact, applying the next product, either a serum or moisturizer, while the essence is still damp on the skin, can help the formula absorb into the face better. Formulas that need drying time (ideally 5 to 10 minutes) are exfoliating acids, like The Texture Tonic, which allow the exfoliants time to get to work before other products are applied on top and potentially neutralize the acids.

The Best Foaming Facial Cleanser

Foaming cleansers can be effective for all, but the secret to using them correctly is discovering a formula that is ideal for your skin type. A creamy foaming cleanser, which imparts a soft hydration onto the skin as cleansing, is more ideal for dry skin, while a refreshing foaming cleanser that includes oil-balancing ingredients is more ideal for combination and oily skin tones. Some formulas work by allowing the dense bubbles to grasp onto debris, sebum, and makeup, washing away in a single step. While other formulas might need an oil cleanser first to break down these trickier long-lasting ingredients.
